Cloud Engineer (Part Time, Fixed Term)


An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Cloud Engineer to join the MRC Epidemiology Unit. This position is based in the Unit's Digital Tools team. The primary role of this post is to architect the cloud infrastructure and support the cloud migration of on-prem software and tools. This role will be critical in ensuring the migrated services are scalable, reliable, maintainable and available.

The cloud engineer will have extensive experience setting up cloud infrastructure on major cloud platforms such as AWS. The role holder will have experience migrating on-prem software to the cloud and developing the cloud migration strategy. The cloud engineer will have experience devising scalable, reliable, available and maintainable cloud solutions. The role holder will have DevOps knowledge including setting up CI/CD pipelines. The cloud engineer will have excellent communication skills and experience working with internal and external stakeholders.

The role will join the remote-first Digital Tools Team at the MRC Epidemiology Unit, University of Cambridge. The team leads software development, data engineering, web development projects and provides LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) support in the Unit. The team works on varied technical projects that support clinical studies and epidemiological research. In order to support clinical and population health research in the UK and internationally, we have pivoted to cloud platforms to scale and grow in step with evolving research requirements.

The MRC Epidemiology Unit is a department within the University of Cambridge's School of Clinical Medicine and is situated within the Institute of Metabolic Science on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. Its mission is to study the genetic, developmental and environmental factors that cause obesity, diabetes and related metabolic disorders and develop strategies for their prevention. The Unit benefits from a number of large-scale, cross programme epidemiological studies with detailed datasets allowing a wide range of research from genetics to public health. Highly experienced information teams and other specialist teams support the scientists in the delivery of their research aims.
