Principal Project Technician


The Department of Engineering has a vacancy for a highly skilled and experienced Project Technician to join the Design and Technical Services Division based at the Department's site in Central Cambridge. The Design and Technical Services Division supports the Department's worldwide reputation for first-class academic research and teaching.

The design projects undertaken are typically highly complex multi-disciplinary systems, facilitating prestigious and highly detailed research projects within the Department by providing a comprehensive in-house consultancy service to academic / research staff.

Reporting to the Electronics Workshop Manager, you will work closely with the other technicians and engineers within the division to provide highly specialised technical support to academic staff and students on research and teaching activities and projects across a number of disciplines. You will also advise on design and manufacture as well as provide project management services to ensure the smooth delivery of assigned projects.

The successful applicant should be educated to HNC/degree level/level 6 vocational qualification, or an equivalent level of practical experience. You should have experience of specialised laboratory activity and equipment, as well as specialist knowledge of relevant regulations and practice. Demonstrable experience in completing bespoke design projects covering multiple engineering disciplines as well as project management experience are also essential requirements for this role. You should possess good IT skills, which include the use of CAD software, and be able to work to a high degree of precision. Knowledge in an engineering subject and excellent communication skills are required to understand technical specification and instruction from customers of the service.
