Research Assistant (Gilbertson Group) (Fixed Term)
We are seeking to recruit a highly enthusiastic and motivated Research Assistant to join the group of Professor Richard Gilbertson at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute. The Gilbertson lab is dedicated to understanding the origins and progression of paediatric brain tumours and developing new therapeutic strategies. The lab combines genetic engineering, molecular biology, and translational research to investigate the cellular and molecular mechanisms driving tumour development.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on, and contribute towards, the smooth-running of the lab and various research projects within the Gilbertson laboratory. They will be expected to work independently and apply their strong problem-solving skills to troubleshoot technical challenges. The successful candidate should have a B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree in a relevant discipline (Biomedical Sciences, Oncology or Neuroscience). The role holder will assist in all aspects of project work including mammalian cell culture, cell transfection, multiple omic approaches including processing of tissues for single cell RNA sequencing, drug discovery, western blotting, and immunohistochemistry among other advanced molecular approaches. In addition, the successful candidate will assist as required in general laboratory administrative tasks and housekeeping responsibilities. Applicants should be adaptable, able to multi-task efficiently, and remain effective in fast-paced research environment. The role-holder must work effectively as part of a team, communicate clearly, and accurately record experimental data.
Molecular techniques such as RNA extraction and qRT-PCR, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry will be required, along with standard laboratory management practices such as stock maintenance, planning and record keeping. Additional techniques will include protein isolation and quantification from cells and human tissue to perform Western Blot and immunoprecipitation.
Applicants will have a BSc degree/MSc in biological sciences and laboratory experience. Practical experience in in vivo studies and holding a home office personal licence to work with animals is highly desirable, but we will be delighted to consider very motivated individuals who can demonstrate excellent relevant laboratory skills. A good working knowledge of cell and molecular biology are required as are strong IT and communication skills. You should be conscientious and ambitious, with the ability to work well both independently and part of a team.
